ABOUT THE WRITERS STUDIO TUCSON WORKSHOPS

The Writers Studio welcomes beginning and advanced students to a unique workshop environment whose sole purpose is to help fiction writers and poets discover and nurture their own voices. We offer a supportive environment and community to beginning students who learn how to turn autobiographical fragments into successful narrative or poetic pieces. We also provide technical guidance and professional criticism to more advanced students who are working on longer pieces.

The Writers Studio focuses on a writer's development as well as on the crafting of individual pieces. This process encourages students to develop a critical frame of reference supportive of each writer's ability. The Writers Studio addresses the needs of both the serious and casual writer. Students living in Tucson, Arizona may take either one 10-week Level I session or continue through to Level II.

The Writers Studio Method

At The Writers Studio students are encouraged to "try on" different narrative voices or personas, often different from their own personalities. As they engage in more challenging exercises, they discover how to use different persona narrators in their own work. As their understanding of craft deepens, so does the emotional power of their writing.

Tucson workshops are held in informal classroom settings. Trained by The Writers Studio, I create exercises appropriate to level I and Level II. In addition to the creation of a persona, various other elements of craft, such as mood, tone, dialogue and poetic techniques, are taught through literary examples. Students are urged to expand these short exercises into publishable works.

Which is the right Level Workshop for me?

Everyone new to The Writers Studio enters at either Level I or Level II. Because we use our own teaching technique, the classes wouldn’t make sense to someone entering above Level II.

Level I:

If you’ve never taken a writing class, but have always wanted to write fiction or poetry or both, sign up for my Level I class. I will guide you through the exercises and support you at your level. If you’ve been writing on your own, or have taken fewer than 4 non-accredited writing workshops, I recommend you take my Level I class. Most of the students will be working at your level and I will give you criticism and support appropriate to your level of experience.

Level II:

If you have taken four or more 10-week workshops beyond the college level, OR if you have an MFA, OR if you have a professional publication, take my Level II class.
